Carter was born in Phoenix (Arizona) as the daughter of Juanita Cordova and Colby Carter. Her father is of English and has Scots Irish ancestry and her mother is Mexican and Spanish. One brother, Vincent and a sister, Pamela, are her siblings. Carter was five years old when she was the first public TV star to make her debut on Lew King's Talent Show. Carter was a member of Just Us in high school. The group played a conga drum and marimba. They also performed on an acoustic and a stand up bass, that was played by another band member. At the age of 15 Lynda began to sing in the local pizza restaurant in order to earn extra cash. She joined her cousins' group, The Relatives, when she was sixteen. Gary Burghoff, actor, was the drummer of the group. The band first performed at the Sahara Hotel and Casino lounge in Las Vegas for three months and because Carter was under 21 she was required to go through the kitchen.Carter went to Arizona State University. After being named "Most Talented" in the school, Carter decided to quit school in pursuit of a career as a musician. Carter auditioned for The Garfin Gathering in 1970. The group then embarked on a tour together with Howard (Speedy), Garfin. Their first show together was at the Holiday Inn Chinatown, a San Francisco hotel that had no sidewalk entrance. Hotel staff and hotel guests parked their cars in the underground parking garage meant that they would be performing to their guests. The Garfin Gathering played shows in several Nevada casino lounges, which included those between Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno. Carter quit the Garfin Gathering to pursue acting in 1972. She then returned to Arizona.
